ICv2 estimated value of the digital comics market in 2011 was $25 million, triple the 2010 figure, and predicts that digital will account for 10 percent of the entire comics market in 2012. Digital sales grew faster in the second half of the year, which ICv2 attributes to three factors: DC’s decision to release its New 52 comics digitally the same day as print, the industry-wide trend toward same-day print and digital releases, and the proliferation of different platforms on which to read digital comics.

SMALLVILLE Season 11.  Written by former Smallville show scribe Bryan Q. Miller, the new digital first series will be published digitally on April 13, 2012, with new digital chapters released weekly thereafter. Additionally, the online chapters will be offered in a print periodical, along with an episode guide to the hit television series, with the first print issue released on May 16. The new comic book series picks-up where the show left off.

May marks another first for the “New 52″ era of DC Comics — oversized annuals for Batman, Teen Titans and Animal Man.

The Batman annual is co-written by series writer Scott Snyder with James Tynion IV.  the issue will feature the debut of classic villain Mr. Freeze in DC’s New 52 continuity, and fit into the building Court of Owls storyline.

The regular Teen Titans team of writer Scott Lobdel and artist Brett Booth are joined on that book’s annual by co-writer Tom DeFalco. The issue kicks off a crossover that continues in Superboy #9, Legion Lost #9 (written by DeFalco), Teen Titans #9 and The Ravagers #1. In a post on The Source, Lobdell reveals that the comic will feature the first glimpse of “the Colony,” and introduce much of The Ravagers cast.

The Animal Man annual is written by series writer Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Timothy Green II.  ”In many ways this Annual is like a prequel to the crossover storyline that Scott Snyder and I have planned for Animal Man and Swamp Thing,” Lemire said in a post on The Source.

Comic Sales for January.  DC leads the pack with most units sold, with a clean sweep of the top ten best selling comics, according to Diamond.  Marvel, however is the leader in Dollar Market for the second month in a row.

The Walking Dead returns with new episodes on February 12!  Followed by the new show Comic Book Men.

Doctor Who Season 7 is set to begin filming Februrary 20th.  The new season of Who will be a momentous one: as we know, Karen Gillan (Amy) and Arthur Darvill (Rory) are set to make their final voyage in the TARDIS this season, and the Doctor is set to meet a “new friend.” And with the 50th anniversary looming in 2013, there are sure to be many surprises to come.

• Spider-Men is coming in June.
• Director Matthew Vaughn is returning for an X-Men: First Class sequel, Deadline reported Monday. The news was tucked into a post on Fox production president Emma Watts sticking with the studio through 2015, along with word that Bryan Singer is returning as producer, and that Simon Kinberg — a First Class producer and co-writer of X-Men: The Last Stand — will write the screenplay. Though no other details are yet available — like possible storylines, actors returning or an estimated start time for production — in the same article Deadline speculates that Chronicle director Josh Trank might be tapped for a Fantastic Four reboot, also at Fox. X-Men: First Class, released last June, grossed $146.4 million domestically, for a worldwide total of $353.6 million.
• Ghost Rider 2 Movie is being realeased in Theaters February 17.

Welcome to Completely Comics Episode #36 Completely Ho Ho Ho!

PBS is releasing a three part history special called “The Never Ending Battle”.  Tracing the impact of super heroes on our culture from 1938 til today.   It will feature Stan Lee,  Joe Simon, Neal Adams and many more.

Sterling Gates is leaving the Hawk & Dove series as of issue #5.  He hopes to do more DC work, but will is currently working on Kirby Genesis: Captain Victory released by Dynamite.  Artist Rob Liefeld will not only continue drawing Hawk and Dove, but will be writing as well.

Captain America co-creator Joe Simon passed away at the age of 98.  He was a long-time collaborator with Jack Kirby, having worked together on many projects.  His body of work includes working on Captain Marvel comics for Fawcett,  and created Manhunter and the Newsboy Legion for National.  He created the Fighting American with jack Kirby in 1954, which was one of the first creator owned properties in comic book history.  He created The Fly for Archie’s super hero line, as well as Brother Power and Prez for DC.

Marvel’s second wave of Season One graphic novels has been announced.  Ant Man,  Hulk, and Doctor Strange.

Today Troy and Will talk about a recent trip to get another Comic Book Store Inventory.

Comic Book News:

• DC Comics’ The New 52 has powered the rejuvenated publisher to a third consecutive first place showing on the top of Diamond Comic Distributors comic book and graphic novel sales charts, but the newly-reversed gap between DC and Marvel has narrowed considerably.
• Newsarama reports: Powered by the bestselling comic book of November 2011 – Justice League #3 – and 4 of the Top 5 bestselling titles, 6 of the Top 10, and the bestselling graphic novel of the month – Batman: Noel, DC again sits atop of both the Unit and Dollar Market Share charts, with 39.66% Unit Share and 34.69% Dollar Share, respectively.
• These figures narrowly beat out Marvel, who led by their bestselling comic book of the month, the Point One special (#5 on the charts), accounted for 37.84% of Unit Share and 33.30% of Dollar share, leaving it a guessing game whether DC’s momentum will allow it to hold onto its industry lead in upcoming months.
• Perhaps the real headline news, however, is due to extremely strong comic book unit sales (+30.06%) and graphic novel dollar sales (+12.43%) compared to November 2010, year-to-date 2011 has leapt ahead of ytd 2010 sales by 5.47% in Units and 1.87% in Dollars, the first time both figures have been in positive territory this year.
• Yes, it’s official – after an extremely slow start to the year, the comic book industry is growing in 2011.
• Jerry Robinson, creator of the Joker died in his sleep Wednesday night.  He was 89.
• Lots of changes in creators.  Gail Simone leaving Firestorm.  Brian Michael Bendis off the Avengers.  Fabian Nicieza off of Legion Lost.
• Avengers X-Sanction #1 comes out next week, starting a new Marvel event.  Cable comes back to prevent the upcoming tragedies that spark the Avengers vs the X-Men event.. and every move he makes changes the Marvel Universe.
