3) “Arrow” TV Show Talk

We start out discussing the Comiic Book origins of the “Arrow” and then discuss our general thoughts about the show, “Arrow”. While we planned to discuss each episode of the show, (below are Arrow episode synopsis from Wikipedia) we quickly changed it up and our love of the show Arrow comes out…

*Show Synopsis from Wikipedia

Episode 1: “Pilot”
After a shipwreck that claims the life of his father, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen is missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his mother Moira, his younger sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home but sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he has become, he tries to reconcile with his former girlfriend, Laurel, for cheating on her with her sister, who also died in the shipwreck. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly masquerades as a hooded vigilante archer by night, attempting to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory as his late father had entrusted him to do before his death. Oliver’s first personal task is to take down corrupt millionaire Adam Hunt, who has scammed millions from various people in Starling City. Laurel’s father, police detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante. Meanwhile, Oliver’s mother is revealed to have an agenda against her son, having orchestrated a kidnapping to determine what his father told him after the shipwreck.

Episode 2: “Honor Thy Father”
Laurel brings a civil suit against millionaire Martin Somers, who is also one of Oliver’s targets, for the taking part in drug trades with the Chinese Triads that ultimately led to the death of a young woman’s father. As the hooded vigilante, Oliver threatens Somers to make him confess to the murder as penance for all of the wrongs he has done to the city. Instead, Somers contacts the Triad, who sends their assassin, China White, to kill Laurel. Oliver saves Laurel from China; he also captures and gives an audio recording of Somers’ confession to Detective Lance. Meanwhile, Oliver’s mother and Walter push Oliver to take a position at the company. Oliver intentionally embarrasses the family at the opening of the company’s new applied sciences division to get out of it, knowing that he cannot honor his father’s request to fight for the city and be the man his mother wants him to be at the same time. A flashback to Oliver’s time on the island shows him being attacked by an unknown hooded figure wielding a bow and arrow.

Episode 3: “Lone Gunmen”
Oliver tracks down another millionaire from his list, but before he can get the answers he wants the man is killed by an assassin known as Deadshot. Initially, the police suspect that the vigilante, whom they refer to as “The Hood”, is responsible for the murder, but the evidence begins to prove that he did not kill anyone. Oliver decides to build a new dance club above his hideout to explain where he goes at night. While comparing the competition, Oliver finds Thea, who reveals that Laurel and Tommy had been sleeping together during Oliver’s abscence. Laurel becomes suspicious when Oliver does not react to the news. Meanwhile, Oliver uses the assassin’s M.O. to learn his true identity, and enlists the help of Detective Lance to stop Deadshot from assassinating more of the wealthy. Oliver manages to stop Deadshot, apparently killing him in the process, but his bodyguard Diggle is shot during the assassination attempt. Oliver is forced to reveal his true identity to Diggle in order to save Diggle’s life. In another flashback, it is revealed that the archer who attacked Oliver was actually trying to help him. Oliver misunderstands and escapes, but is pursued by an unknown group of armed professionals.

Episode 4: “An Innocent Man”
Diggle awakens in Oliver’s hideout, where Oliver offers Diggle a chance to fight at his side and help the city. Diggle turns him down, calling him a murderer. Later, while watching the news, Oliver discovers a connection between Declan, a deathrow inmate, and Jason Brodeur, one of the men on his list. In his vigilante persona, he enlists the help of Laurel to prove the man innocent before he is executed. Working together, the pair uncover the truth, but Jason Brodeur has his bodyguard stage a prison break so that he can have Laurel and the inmate killed before the truth is revealed. Oliver sneaks into the prison dressed as a guard, with a ski mask to hide his face, and saves Laurel and Declan. The bodyguard ultimately confesses to Declan’s innocence. Diggle meets with Oliver and agrees to work with him so that he can both protect the city and protect Oliver from losing his humanity. Detective Lance arrests Oliver on suspicion of being the vigilante after seeing footage of him changing into his disguise before the last Deadshot confrontation. Meanwhile, Walter discovers that Moira has been keeping the salvaged and sabotaged family yacht hidden in a warehouse.

Episode: 5: “Damaged”
Detective Lance charges Oliver with murder, so Oliver hires Laurel to be his attorney. Given Oliver’s time on the island, the district attorney offers Oliver an insanity plea with an indeterminate amount of time spent in a psychiatric facility under a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. Oliver declines, and offers to take a polygraph test for Detective Lance to prove his innocence. Although his test indicates he is telling the truth about not being the vigilante, the experience causes Oliver to have flashbacks to his time on the island. Oliver specifically remembers when he is caught by the armed professionals and tortured by Deathstroke before being saved by the hooded archer, which he shares with Laurel. While under house arrest, Oliver maintains his bachelor playboy facade by throwing a prison themed party and reveals to Diggle his plan was to get caught so that he could convince everyone that he was not the vigilante from the start. To accomplish this, Oliver has Diggle dress as the vigilante and go after a German arms dealer who is in the city to sell automatic weapons to the city gangs. Oliver’s plan works and the charges are dropped against him. Meanwhile, Moira meets with the an unknown associate, who is tied to the list that Oliver has, regarding the vigilante attacking members of their secret organization. Walter leaves the house after confronting Moira on her deception.

Episode 6: “Legacies”
Oliver begins preparing to take on another individual from his father’s list, but Diggle argues that he should expand his work and help the police take down a group of bank robbers. Oliver initially refuses, believing that it detracts from his mission to right his father’s wrongs; Diggle is able to persuade Oliver in the end. Oliver uses police files and IT specialist Felicity Smoak to deduce that the robbers are actually a family unit, and that the leader Derek Reston worked for Queen Industries before Robert Queen outsourced 1500 jobs to China and the Reston family lost their home as a result. Feeling guilty, Oliver tries to persuade Derek to right his own wrongs, but when he learns that the family are going to rob another bank he chooses to stop them. During Oliver’s confrontation, Derek is shot and not killed. Meanwhile, Tommy throws Laurel a fundraiser to help her pro-bono law firm, CNRI, stay in business; Tommy hopes that this will show Laurel that he is serious about wanting a relationship with her. Flashbacks also reveal how Oliver first discovered the target names in his father’s notebook.

2) Comic Book News

Comics:

  • Concerning Justice League: “The first year was about the Justice League and who they are and their conflicts,” Johns said. “One relationship changes in a very big way.” There will be people quitting, Johns added, saying the next year is about how the team SHOULD be, rather than as they are. Justice League #0 in September will have Billy Batson meet the Wizard Shazam. They do not get along — Shazam is weirded out that a kid is visiting him, whereas Billy doesn’t like Shazam telling him what to do. Johns says that Billy will be joining the Justice League. Tony Daniel will be on the book after Issue #12, in a story that re-introduces the Cheetah and seeds the Trinity War in 2013.
  • Concerning Green Lantern: Johns says that the Third Army’s rationale is that the Guardians realize that emotion and fear aren’t the problem for universal strife — it’s free will. “The Guardians are trying to wipe out the main players,” including Lanterns like Kyle and Hal Jordan, Johns says.
Johns says that the Guardians have been working to take apart the other Corps, as well, but that Atrocitus isn’t that easy to take down. Green Lantern New Guardians #0 — “By Issue #12, you’ll learn why all those rings came to Kyle in the first place.” In Issue #0, we’re going to have more first-string Lanterns, like Atrocitous, Larfleeze and Carol Ferris. Bedard says that Kyle will begin to learn to master the other colors on the emotional spectrum.
  • Writer/director/pop culture auteur Quentin Tarantino broke into DC Comics’ Before Watchmen panel at Comic-Con Saturday to announce a Django Unchained comic book adaptation at DC, based on his highly-anticipated upcoming film. According to DC, the 5-issue limited series will go on sale in November. “One of the things I’m really excited about is that Django Unchained is a big epic, and when I write these epics there’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t make the movies” Tarantino told the audience. “I’m always stuck with adapting my unwieldy script into a movie every day. So what’s really cool with doing this is as a comic book is it’s the entire script. All the material that didn’t make the movie will all be part of the piece. I’m really excited about that!” “So be looking out for Django Unchained in a comic book store near you! And thanks for letting me barge in on your panel”
  • Neil Gaiman will be returning for the last remaining Sandman story, and will be drawn by J.H. Williams.  It will be released in 2013, and tells the story of how Morpheus became inprisoned prior to Sandman #1.
  • The Hulk series will get a name change, and a new lead character.  It will now be titled Red She-Hulk.

There was a lot of great Cosplay at SDCC 2012.  Check out our Facebook group page for more photos!

Multimedia:

  • Confirmed for Iron Man 3… Ben Kingsley is Mandarin.  The ‘Iron Patriot’ photo leaked a while ago is in fact War Machine, not Norman Osborne.  The movies plot draws many elements from the “Extremis” story arc.
  • Thor 2 Has Started Filming In London – In the Marvel Studios Panel at Comic-Con, Kevin Feige revealed that filming has already started in London for Thor The Dark World.  Loki will not be the main villain in Thor 2, but will have a part.  Zachary Levi will be replacing Josh Dallas as Fandral the Dashing.  Kenneth Branagh is not directing, instead it will be Alan Taylor from Game of Thrones.  Thor The Dark World movie is scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States on November 8, 2013.
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier was announced.  Most likely based on the story from the comic where Bucky Barnes is found frozen in the ice, much like Cap, but was instead found by the Russians who turned him into an assassin.  The movie arrives on April 4, 2014.
  • Marvel announced the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, putting the rumor to rest.  The lineup for the film includes Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Gamorra, Groot and Star Lord.  It will be released on August 1, 2014.
  • Director Edgar Wright (‘Shaun of the Dead’) who has long been rumored to be working on an ‘Ant Man’ movie, confirmed that he is directing an ‘Ant Man’ movie but no release date is yet set. Since Marvel is aiming for two movies per year, I wouldn’t expect to see this one before 2015.
  • Firefly is getting a shiny new TV special.  To celebrate the cult-favorite sci-fi drama’s 10th anniversary, Science Channel is shooting a new one-hour special chronicling the Firefly cast reunion at Comic-Con this week.  The special — titled Browncoats Unite — will include footage from Friday’s reunion panel, featuring several members of the original team including star Nathan Fillion and creator Joss Whedon. Plus, the cast is shooting an in-depth behind-the-scenes roundtable interview that will dive deeper into burning fan questions about the beloved series. Both the panel and the roundtable will be moderated by Entertainment Weekly‘s own Jeff Jensen.
  • Disney/Marvel announced a Phineas and Ferb special episode, featuring the first official crossover between the Disney and Marvel properties.  Phineas and Ferb will meet some of Marvel’s biggest heroes, including Spider-Man, Thor and Iron Man.

4) Wiki of the Week: Rocket from Young Justice: Invasion

Taken from Comicvine.  http://www.comicvine.com/rocket/29-16695/

Biography

Raquel Ervin was born in Paris Island, the poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhood in Dakota. Although she is only the sidekick of the title character, Icon, she is the actual protagonist of the series. She yearned to become a writer,, but lacked the motivation. That is, until she met Augustus Freeman IV, a corporate lawyer who was secretly a stranded alien with superhuman powers. This occurred while she and her friends were robbing Freeman’s home. Raquel convinced Augustus to become the superhero Icon, and to take her on as his sidekick, Rocket. While in costume, she wore a belt Icon fashioned out of his escape pod’s inertia winder, which allowed her to manipulate kinetic energy.
Shortly after she began adventuring with Icon, Raquel discovered that she was pregnant by her ex-boyfriend, Noble. She decided to keep the baby, becoming the first single teenage mother in comics. She gave birth to a son, whom she named Amistad Augustus Ervin, named “Amistad” after famous ship that brought slaves over from Africa to America, and “Augustus” after Augustus Freeman IV, the Human alias of Dakota City superhero Icon. During her pregnancy, Raquel trained her best friend Darnice to temporarily assume duties as Rocket. Raquel eventually resumed her role as Rocket.

Rocket was more liberal than Icon, which caused them to clash on a number of occasions. She befriended Static, another teenage superhero from Dakota City. While it has been hinted that someday they might become more than friends, their relationship remained platonic throughout the run of their respective titles.

DC Universe

In the revised Milestone continuity (which merged with the main DC Universe), Rocket is still partnered with Icon.

Powers

All of Rocket’s superhuman powers derive from the inertia winder installed in her belt buckle. This device is one of two from Icon’s escape pod, the other is installed in Hardware’s current suit of armor. When activated, the inertia winder surrounds Rocket in an “inertia field,” which absorbs, stores, and redirects any kinetic energy used against it. This field protects her from anything invested with kinetic energy: physical blows, bullets, falls, falling debris, etc. The inertia field normally extends a few inches from Rocket’s body, but she can expand the field to much greater sizes. She once enclosed a crowd of about 50 people within her field without it losing its durability.
Rocket is able to project stored energy in blasts usually from her hands over a distance, causing great damage depending on the amount of energy she uses. She can also fly by releasing the stored kinetic energy beneath her, launching her skyward. She is particularly skilled in this ability, able to perform complex aerial maneuvers and hover by controlling the amount of energy released. Rocket has also learned to how to use her inertia winder to surround her opponents in an “inertialess field” which negates any kinetic energy within it down to the molecular level, effectively immobilizing them. Some opponents even fall unconscious because the field can prevent oxygen molecules from reaching their lungs.
Other uses of his field includes imbuing objects with large amounts of kinetic energy when thrown increasing their speed, effectively allowing her to throw rocks at the speed of bullets. Alternatively she can release this energy when she throws a punch delivering enough shock force to stagger beings as powerful as Icon if she uses a high enough amount.
Rocket’s inertia field has certain weaknesses due to its very nature. The field will not activate if a person or object exerts little kinetic energy against it. This makes Rocket vulnerable to stealth attacks, which rely on slower movements and minimal force. Also, the inertia field offers little protection against weapons based on non-kinetic energy like thermal (e.g., flamethrowers) or electrical (e.g., tasers).
Raquel Ervin is a voracious reader and a gifted writer. A former high school gymnast, she is very agile and has quick reflexes. Rocket is also a good hand-to-hand combatant due to her crime-fighting experience as Icon’s sidekick.

In Other Media

Rocket appears in the animated series Young Justice, starting off in several brief cameos before joining the main cast at the end of the first season. She first appears in “Revelation,” where she battles one of Poison Ivy’s plant creatures during the Injustice League’s attack on several major cities. She later reappears in “Failsafe” as one of the Earth’s heroes who repels an alien invasion, although this was only an illusion created by Miss Martian as a training exercise.
She officially becomes a member of the team upon Icon’s induction into the Justice League. She first joins the group during a mission to locate Cheshire, which leads to an ambush orchestrated by the Riddler. She is shown to harbor an attraction to Aqualad, who helps her after she is attacked by Apokoliptian weaponry.
Rocket appears in the sequel series Young Justice: Invasion, now five years older. A legal adult, Rocket is nown shown as a member of the Justice League alongside Zatanna.

As highly anticipated as they are controversial, the seven inter-connected prequel mini-series will build on the foundation of the original WATCHMEN, the bestselling graphic novel of all time. BEFORE WATCHMEN will be the collective banner for all seven titles, from DC Comics.“It’s our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. “After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told.
