If you think, because of something happening to a FICTIONAL character, that you need to type out a death threat and SEND it to someone: You. Need. Help. If you follow my twitter, you know I’ve taken a devilish bit of delight in re-posting these (mainly because they usually make the OP look like a raving loon– and, for a time, that WAS funny to me.) Well… That’s over. From now on, they ALL get reported. The End.”

The Ages of Comics, by Will Mitchell

We had a recent discussion over on our Facebook group page,  about the different ages of comics.  Starting with the Golden Age, and going to the present.  There have been several different eras and transitional periods since the beginning, so I thought I’d put my two cents in.

1) The Golden Age (Jan 1936 – 1944ish)

New Fun (later More Fun) Comics #1 (first serial comics produced that weren’t newspaper clips) -> The Rise of EC Comics (Super heroes begin to fade out, Horror rises)  This era is notable for the creation of super hero comics and the high patriotism shown by it’s classic characters.

2) The Wertham Era (1944- 1954)

EC Comics Horror comics -> “Seduction of the Innocent” published.  Horror and detective type stories were on the rise, and super hero comics were on the down swing.  Although some super heroes continued to be published, they were few.  Covers depicting women in bondage and horror scenes were prominent.  This era ended with the publication of ‘Seduction of the Innocent’ and the formation of the ‘Comics Code Authority’.

3) The Silver Age (1954 – 1971/73)

Showcase #4 First Barry Allen Flash -> foggy, but the big two companies did it within a couple of years of each other.. Green Lantern v2 #85-86 and Amazing Spider-Man #121.   The silver age was a return to innocence of comics.  The stories were written to target young boys, and super heroes returned to prominence.  With the re-imagining of DC’s stable, and the creation of characters such as Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four, super heroes were back to stay.  This era ended between 1971 and 1973.. with the more adult issues being covered at DC and Marvel.  Green Arrow discovered his sidekick, Speedy was doing heroine, and Spider-Man’s girl friend, Gwen Stacy was killed by the Green Goblin.

4) The Bronze Age (1973ish – 1986)

This age runs until the tumultuous mid- 80’s.  Comics seemed to be growing up, but were still restricted by the CCA.  Characters were drawn more sexy (see the Legion of Super-Heroes of the Cockrum and Grell eras).  Team books were popular, New Teen Titans, X-Men and Legion of Super-Heroes were the top sellers of the day.
Crisis on Infinite Earths, Secret Wars, Dark Knight Returns and The Watchmen, really changed the landscape of comics. Comics became more dark.. grim, gritty and edgy.

5) The Dark Age aka The Iron Age (1986 – 1992)

With the grittiness of the dark age, comics were no longer aimed at the younger readers, and comics are harder to find at your local convenience store or pharmacy. Books go to direct comic stores only. Soon, a group of artists become fed up with not owning their creations and form Image Comics, ending the age, and changing the face of comics forever.

6) The Image Era aka The Copper Age? (1992 – 1998)

Many independent companies become inspired by Image’s success. A wide variety of comics are published, but many die quickly. Variant covers are the norm.. holographic covers, foil covers, books with bullet holes. Speculators buy every #1 and variant book they can get their hands on. Gimmicks are tried by all the publishers. Heroes Reborn, Death of Superman, Batman’s broken back, etc. Marvel filed for bankruptcy and sales plummet.

7)  The Dynamic Age (coined by CBR writer) (1998 – 2004)

The rise of new blood at DC and Marvel (Dan Didio and Joe Queseda) ushered in a time of growth for both companies. The two companies tried new things, including Marvel’s Ultimate Comics line, and DC’s Young Justice, Major Bummer, Chase and more. Overall, it’s a good time to be a fan, with both of the big two basically recovering from the implosion of the previous age.

8) The Event Age (which the name must be changed.. it’s almost a Dark Age 2) (2004-2011)

Things grow darker again, as the Comics Code is removed from many books. Books such as Identity Crisis and X-Men are incredibly dark and violent. Decapitations, rape, and other horrible actions are depicted in many comics.  Event books were published constantly by companies.  Sometimes multiple events were occurring at the same time throughout the companies lines.

9) The Digital Age (2011- Present)

Publishers go day and date digital, meaning, comics are offered online the same day they go to print. It’s specifically marked by DC in September as they released their ‘New 52’.  This age is still going, as the companies continue to perfect their digital releases, and try new things with the technology.  As the use of personal tablets and cell phones grow, it can be assumed that digital comics will grow along with them.

Episode 61: Completely Important News from San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2012!

Welcome to Completely Comics Episode 61:  Completely Important News from San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2012! Kentucky Geek Girl joins Will and Troy for this special ‘unplugged’ episode.

1) Update with the guys

Will: OMG, I lost my Wallet!

Troy: Not a thing.

2) Comic Book News

Comics:

  • Concerning Justice League: “The first year was about the Justice League and who they are and their conflicts,” Johns said. “One relationship changes in a very big way.” There will be people quitting, Johns added, saying the next year is about how the team SHOULD be, rather than as they are. Justice League #0 in September will have Billy Batson meet the Wizard Shazam. They do not get along — Shazam is weirded out that a kid is visiting him, whereas Billy doesn’t like Shazam telling him what to do. Johns says that Billy will be joining the Justice League. Tony Daniel will be on the book after Issue #12, in a story that re-introduces the Cheetah and seeds the Trinity War in 2013.
  • Concerning Green Lantern: Johns says that the Third Army’s rationale is that the Guardians realize that emotion and fear aren’t the problem for universal strife — it’s free will. “The Guardians are trying to wipe out the main players,” including Lanterns like Kyle and Hal Jordan, Johns says.
Johns says that the Guardians have been working to take apart the other Corps, as well, but that Atrocitus isn’t that easy to take down. Green Lantern New Guardians #0 — “By Issue #12, you’ll learn why all those rings came to Kyle in the first place.” In Issue #0, we’re going to have more first-string Lanterns, like Atrocitous, Larfleeze and Carol Ferris. Bedard says that Kyle will begin to learn to master the other colors on the emotional spectrum.
  • Writer/director/pop culture auteur Quentin Tarantino broke into DC Comics’ Before Watchmen panel at Comic-Con Saturday to announce a Django Unchained comic book adaptation at DC, based on his highly-anticipated upcoming film. According to DC, the 5-issue limited series will go on sale in November. “One of the things I’m really excited about is that Django Unchained is a big epic, and when I write these epics there’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t make the movies” Tarantino told the audience. “I’m always stuck with adapting my unwieldy script into a movie every day. So what’s really cool with doing this is as a comic book is it’s the entire script. All the material that didn’t make the movie will all be part of the piece. I’m really excited about that!” “So be looking out for Django Unchained in a comic book store near you! And thanks for letting me barge in on your panel”
  • Neil Gaiman will be returning for the last remaining Sandman story, and will be drawn by J.H. Williams.  It will be released in 2013, and tells the story of how Morpheus became inprisoned prior to Sandman #1.
  • The Hulk series will get a name change, and a new lead character.  It will now be titled Red She-Hulk.

There was a lot of great Cosplay at SDCC 2012.  Check out our Facebook group page for more photos!
Completely Comics Facebook Group Page!

Multimedia:

  • Confirmed for Iron Man 3… Ben Kingsley is Mandarin.  The ‘Iron Patriot’ photo leaked a while ago is in fact War Machine, not Norman Osborne.  The movies plot draws many elements from the “Extremis” story arc.
  • Thor 2 Has Started Filming In London – In the Marvel Studios Panel at Comic-Con, Kevin Feige revealed that filming has already started in London for Thor The Dark World.  Loki will not be the main villain in Thor 2, but will have a part.  Zachary Levi will be replacing Josh Dallas as Fandral the Dashing.  Kenneth Branagh is not directing, instead it will be Alan Taylor from Game of Thrones.  Thor The Dark World movie is scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States on November 8, 2013.
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier was announced.  Most likely based on the story from the comic where Bucky Barnes is found frozen in the ice, much like Cap, but was instead found by the Russians who turned him into an assassin.  The movie arrives on April 4, 2014.
  • Marvel announced the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, putting the rumor to rest.  The lineup for the film includes Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Gamorra, Groot and Star Lord.  It will be released on August 1, 2014.
  • Director Edgar Wright (‘Shaun of the Dead’) who has long been rumored to be working on an ‘Ant Man’ movie, confirmed that he is directing an ‘Ant Man’ movie but no release date is yet set. Since Marvel is aiming for two movies per year, I wouldn’t expect to see this one before 2015.
  • Firefly is getting a shiny new TV special.  To celebrate the cult-favorite sci-fi drama’s 10th anniversary, Science Channel is shooting a new one-hour special chronicling the Firefly cast reunion at Comic-Con this week.  The special — titled Browncoats Unite — will include footage from Friday’s reunion panel, featuring several members of the original team including star Nathan Fillion and creator Joss Whedon. Plus, the cast is shooting an in-depth behind-the-scenes roundtable interview that will dive deeper into burning fan questions about the beloved series. Both the panel and the roundtable will be moderated by Entertainment Weekly‘s own Jeff Jensen.
  • Disney/Marvel announced a Phineas and Ferb special episode, featuring the first official crossover between the Disney and Marvel properties.  Phineas and Ferb will meet some of Marvel’s biggest heroes, including Spider-Man, Thor and Iron Man.

1) A complete re-introduction of the guys

Will’s First Comic!

Troy’s First Comic!

Will Mitchell was born and raised near a small town in rural Kentucky. At a young age, he was introduced to the world of comics by his brother, Stewart. Early favorites included Justice League, The Avengers, Legion of Super-Heroes and the Defenders. Will has worked on several writing projects, including a screenplay for “Vampire Mistress” with Rodney Wess at RW Films LLC. Over the years, Will’s enjoyment of comics has increased. He was so inspired by the Legion of Substitute Podcasters that he begin a podcast with life-long friend Troy Price.
As a kid, Troy Price passed the time on the long bus ride home from school reading comics, frequently ones borrowed from Will.  Back then, Will was the source of all comic book knowledge… much like now.   Over the years, Troy never forgot the amazing world of his comic book heroes.  When Troy moved back ‘home’ (not his mother’s basement), he and Will picked up where they left off talking about comics. Now they don’t talk about comics on the school bus – they talk about comics on this show.

Completely Comics is a light-hearted and humorous introduction to the comic book world.  Discover the origin of some of your favorite characters, both classic and newly created.  Listen to writers and illustrators talk about their work.  Find out what’s happening in comic book news — from comic book movies to trends in comic publishing. Tune in to learn the best new comics each week.

Join Troy and Will as they illuminate, exaggerate, and celebrate the world of comics. Catch the ‘Wiki Of The Week’ and the ‘Muy Buenos’.

2) Comic Book News

  • The Return of He-Man.  DC Comics will be bringing the Masters of the Universe back to the Comic book pages.  It will be written by James Robinson (Starman, The Shade) and drawn by Philip Tan.  Skeletor has won, and is in power sitting in Castle Greyskull.  He-Man and the other masters have no memory of their battles with Skeletor and his lackeys.

Ode to Gwen Lyrics

I didn’t sleep at all last night.
Considering Spider-man’s plight.
Kept Swinging through my head
How Gwen Stacy is dead.
Yeah, a lot of things changed that night.

It was June 1973.
Green Goblin became his main ‘Nemisee’
Nemesis wouldn’t rhyme.
Artists make up words all the time.
Now Mary Jane his wife would be.

They say it stopped the silver age.
Heroes being perfect was just a phase.
A hero could lose.
That’s bad news.
It started this Modern Craze.
