Lexington Comic & Toy Convention Memories

LexCon 2012

Lexington Comic & Toy Convention  has come and gone, but it still lives in the memories of everyone who visited.  The convention was held on Saturday, March 24th at the Lexington Convention Center (home to the historic Rupp Arena and the University of Kentucky Wildcats).  The con featured comic book creators, publishers, vendors, celebrities and the DeLorean from “Back To The Future”.

The busiest folks at the Con had to be the Power Rangers.  Five members of the Power Rangers cast were in attendance.  Jason David Frank, who played Tommy on several seasons, had a constant line of people wanting autographs and photos.  So much so, that I never got a chance to speak with him.  The others had lines as well, but were a bit more accessible.  Paul Schrier (Bulk) and Jason Narvy (Skull) are incredibly funny in real life.  Catherine Sutherland (Pink Ranger) and Nakia Burrise (Yellow Ranger) were incredibly cool and fun to talk with.  We actually helped them find the show floor on Friday night, and I admit, I geeked out a little bit.

The Power Rangers held an hour long Q&A for fans of the show.  The audience ranged from the very young, to the gray-haired young at heart.  The actors answered every question from the fans given to them, some light-hearted, some serious.  One fan had come from a hard childhood, and commented how The Power Rangers had taught him how to be a good person with their morals on the show.

I attended another panel which featured Mike Grell, legendary artist and writer, and Mark Ryan, writer and voice actor.  The two had an interesting conversation about literary archetypes in fiction.  They also had a Q & A session, answer questions about their joint collaboration called “The Pilgrim.”

I had the opportunity to hang out with reality TV icon Jonny Fairplay (Survivor, TNA Wrestling) and Mikayla Wingle (Survivor, Lingerie Football League).  Jonny is a jokester.  Mikayla is amazingly beautiful and as sweet as she can be. While we were joking around I had a chance to take a picture that they shared on their websites!

I had a great time and have lots of good memories about the entire Convention. As well as national celebrities,   I ran into old friends like Daniel Frazier (The Adventures of Nightclaw and Prowler), Eric Banister (Derby City Comic Con) and Natasha Collier (Kentucky Geek Girl).  All three of these people have appeared on Completely Comics.  Daniel is an artist and a writer and works on his creator owned, all ages comic, The Adventures of Nightclaw and Prowler.  Eric Banister is a convention organizer himself, and put together Derby City Comic Con, an annual convention held in Louisville, Kentucky.  Natasha Collier is the Kentucky Geek Girl.  She’s a friend to our show, and hosts a fantastic blog, focusing on all things geeky from a girl’s perspective.

I even ran into other podcasters.  Comics Related was there (Irun into them at every convention I go to).  They’ve been around for awhile, and have always been friendly.  We ran into the guys from Comic Book Jerk.  Hilariously funny, I highly recommend watching their reviews of comic book related movies and shows (just not with your children).  I met the folks from Beaucoup Pop.  We had just discovered these folks, with the help of Natasha Collier (Kentucky Geek Girl) and have loved listening to their show.

The best memory for me, however, was watching Mike Grell sketch a drawing of Shadow Lass of the Legion of Super-Heroes.  The funniest moment..?  Getting locked out of the Con with Jonny Fairplay.. and beating on the doors to get in.

Convention organizer, Jarrod Greer, has a success on his hands. Over 4000 attended the convention, which was unexpected for the Lexington area.  There was at first a question if there was a strong enough interest in a convention such as this in Lexington Kentucky.  The turnout was great enough that next year, the con will be expanded to a two day event, held on March 16th and 17th.

We will be posting our show ‘Completely the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention’  featuring highlights and interviews!  Stay tuned to Completely Comics!

3) Comic Book News

  • DC ENTERTAINMENT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES “BEFORE WATCHMEN”  This summer, DC Entertainment will publish all-new stories expanding on the acclaimed WATCHMEN universe. As highly anticipated as they are controversial, the seven inter-connected prequel mini-series will build on the foundation of the original WATCHMEN, the bestselling graphic novel of all time. BEFORE WATCHMEN will be the collective banner for all seven titles, from DC Comics.“It’s our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. “After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told. We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original.” Stepping up to the challenge is a group of the comic book industry’s most iconoclastic writers and artists – including Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS), Lee Bermejo (JOKER), Amanda Conner (POWER GIRL), Darwyn Cooke (JUSTICE LEAGUE: NEW FRONTIER), John Higgins (WATCHMEN), Adam Hughes (CATWOMAN), J.G. Jones (FINAL CRISIS), Andy Kubert (FLASHPOINT), Joe Kubert (SGT. ROCK), Jae Lee (BATMAN: JEKYLL AND HYDE), J. Michael Straczynski (SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE) and Len Wein (SWAMP THING).BEFORE WATCHMEN includes:RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner Each week, a new issue will be released, and will feature a two-page back-up story called CURSE OF THE CRIMSON CORSAIR, written by original series editor Len Wein and with art by original series colorist John Higgins. There will also be a single issue, BEFORE WATCHMEN: EPILOGUE, featuring the work of various writers and artists, and a CRIMSON CORSAIR story by Wein and Higgins.“The original series of WATCHMEN is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell.  However, I appreciate DC’s reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire,” said Dave Gibbons, WATCHMEN co-creator and original series artist. “Comic books are perhaps the largest and longest running form of collaborative fiction,” said DiDio and Lee. “Collaborative storytelling is what keeps these fictional universes current and relevant.”
  • Spider-Men is coming in June.
  • Director Matthew Vaughn is returning for an X-Men: First Class sequel, Deadline reported Monday. The news was tucked into a post on Fox production president Emma Watts sticking with the studio through 2015, along with word that Bryan Singer is returning as producer, and that Simon Kinberg — a First Class producer and co-writer of X-Men: The Last Stand — will write the screenplay. Though no other details are yet available — like possible storylines, actors returning or an estimated start time for production — in the same article Deadline speculates that Chronicle director Josh Trank might be tapped for a Fantastic Four reboot, also at Fox. X-Men: First Class, released last June, grossed $146.4 million domestically, for a worldwide total of $353.6 million.
  • Ghost Rider 2 Movie is being realeased in Theaters February 17.

News from the San Diego Comic Con

  • DC
  • One of the main goals for the new DC 52, is to add more diversity to the line.  It was confirmed that The Atom in the Justice League book will be Ryan Choi (chweh).  Ryan was murdered in the current DCU, but I suppose Flashpoint will change alot of things.

  • Vertigo
  • Due to the breakout success of Fables, an all-new ongoing series is being launched called Fairest… spotlighting the female characters from Fables.  The first story will be a three-issue arc focusing on Sleeping Beauty by Bill Willingham and artist Phil Jiminez.  The series will include a Rapunzel storyline by novelist Laren Beukes and Inaki Miranda, as well as a third Cinderella story by Chris Roberson and Shawn McManus.
  • Marvel
  • The question of who will be the new Ultimate Spider-Man will be answered in Ultimate Fallout #4.

  • Post Fear Itself, many titles will be branded with the ‘battle scars’ logo.. plus ‘shattered heroes’ one shots focusing on Thor, Captain America and Iron Man.  Matt Fraction will be co-writing a bi-weekly 12-issue limited series titled “The Fearless” with Chris Yost and Cullen Bunn, which picks up directly after the event.  Fraction will also be writing another post-‘Fear itself’ title, a new Defenders series drawn by Terry Dodson.
