6) Wiki of the Week: X-Men Titles

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_X-Men_comics

The X-Men are a group of superheroes in the Marvel Comics universe. The monthly X-Men comic book debuted in 1963, along with the team itself. That series is now titled Uncanny X-Men and is best known by that name. Due to the X-Men’s immense popularity, Marvel has launched dozens of spin-off series, called “X-Books,” throughout the years.
Like Uncanny X-Men, most X-books feature mutants, human beings born with extraordinary powers due to a quantum leap in genetic evolution. Some X-Books feature mutant superhero teams while others feature solo adventures of characters who became popular in Uncanny X-Men or another X-Book. Occasionally, X-Books use mutants as a metaphor for racial, religious and other minorities oppressed by society.
For the purpose of this list, “X-Men Comics” will be defined by the following criteria:

6) Wiki of the Week: Spider-man’s webshooters. Information taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man%27s_powers_and_equipment.

Spider-Man’s web-shooters, from The Amazing Spider-Man#259. Art by Ron Frenz

Webshooters from The Amazing Spider-man 2012 movie.

Emma Stone revealed that in the The Amazing Spider-Man, (2012) Peter Parker will be inventing and shooting webs from web-shooters instead of organic webbing in the previous films. The second trailer shows they will be more high-tech than most versions.

When Stan Lee created Spider-Man he did not want Spider-Man to be too powerful. due to his super-abilities and he made his webbing a result of his human intellect rather than his spider bite. This has remained true with the exception of his original black costume  and during the recent ‘Disassembled’ storyline.

In his origin story, Peter reasoned that a spider (even a human one) needed a web. Since the radioactive spider-bite did not initially grant him the power to spin webs, he had instead found a way to produce them artificially. The wrist-mounted devices fire an adhesive “webbing” (see below) through a threaded adjustable nozzle. The trigger rests high in the palm and requires a double tap from the middle two fingers to activate, eliminating the chance of accidental discharge when forming a fist.[56] To accomplish this his hands are often in a distinctive hand position when he fires them (resembling the sign for “I love you” in American Sign Language, reverting someone giving you the “Evil Eye” in Italian superstition or the horned hand heavy-metal gesture). In order to fire the webbing, Spider-Man’s fingers must hit the sensor precisely.

Spider-Man must steadily replenish his webbing supply, reloading his web-shooters with small cartridges of web fluid, which is stored under high pressure. In early stories, he carries his extra supplies in a utility belt worn under his costume.[57] Later on, he equips the web-shooters with a bracelet-like carousel that automatically rotates a new cartridge into position as he empties them. When in use, a steel nipple in the carousel pierces the seal of the cartridge, and allows the fluid to travel through an air-tight channel toward the nozzle. Pressing down on the palm-trigger of the web-shooter causes the valve in the nozzle to open wider, expelling the fluid out. Releasing the trigger causes the valves to close, cutting off the web-line or fluid. If Spider-Man creates any variation to his normal web formula that’s too strong for the pinch valves to sever, he might end up being tangled up or tied to the object he attached his web to. This has happened on more than one occasion. His web-shooters require constant maintenance and on more than one occasion suffer jams or malfunctions.

Death of Jean Giraud aka Moebius. Jean Henri Giraud, better known as Moebius, was born in 1938 in the suburbs of Paris. He’s been using the Moebius pseudonym since 1963, when he wanted to draw a distinction between his work in fantasy and science fiction and other works. Giraud started art school at the age of 16, and by 18, he was drawing a comic strip called “Frank et Jeremie” for FAR WEST magazine.
Moebius did strips from 1963 to 1964 in a magazine called HARA-KIRI and then disappeared for many years. Then in 1975, he co-created a magazine entitled METAL HURLANT. In 1981, he started his immensely popular INCAL series with Alejandro Jodorowsky. ARZACH and the serial, THE AIRTIGHT GARAGE, also had their origins in METAL HURLANT.
In 1988, Moebius drew a two-part SILVER SURFER limited series with writer, Stan Lee.  He did production design for several movies, including Alien,  Dune, Tron, The Abyss and The Fifth Element.    He passed away at the age of 73.

Lots of creator changes on the way.  Brian Michael Bendis will be taking on the X-Men franchise.  Amy Reeder is leaving Batwoman citing ‘creative differences’.  Jeff Lemire will be taking over Justice League Dark.

The mysterious lady in purple, known as “Pandora” who appeared at the end of Flashpoint and in all of the 1st issues of the new 52 had a back-up story in Justice League #6.. she was in a heated debate with the Phantom Stranger.

3) Comic Book News

New Avengers Trailer and Movie Poster… A new movie poster was released this week, with Robert Downy Jr. taking front and center as Iron Man.  It’s a cool poster, but it seems a little… off in my opinion.  The trailer, on the other hand, is mind blowing, and will definitely get you excited for the movie.

Earth 2 Character Designs… Recently, DC has been releasing their designs for their Earth 2 characters.  The characters have been designed by Jim Lee and Kevin Maguire.  These characters will appear in the new DC books, Earth 2 and Worlds’ Finest.  Shown so far have been Batman, Wonder Woman, Robin (who is now Huntress) and Supergirl (who is now Power Girl).

No Bill Murray for Ghost Busters 3.  Bill Murray has decided against doing a Ghostbusters 3.  Apparently none of the scripts shown to him have been good enough, and it appears they never will be.  However, the plan is to still move on without Bill Murray or his character Peter Venkman.

San Diego Comic Con sold out in 90 minutes!

One of the great Golden Age artists, Sheldon Moldoff past away at the age of 91.  His first work was in Action Comics #1 with a sports piece called “Odds and Ends”.  He is known for his work on Hawkman and co-created Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, Batwoman and Batgirl, Bat-Mite and Ace the Bat-Hound.
